Jolyon Palmer will compete against six-time Olympic cycling gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy in Friday's Race of Champions Nations Cup at London's former Olympic Stadium, after MotoGP Champion Jorge Lorenzo was forced to pull out of the event through injury.

Hoy will replace Lorenzo in Team All Stars, and partner Jolyon's fellow Lotus F1 Team driver Romain Grosjean in the Nations Cup, which pits a total of 20 drivers in 10 teams against each other, with each match being a best-of-three, with the two winning drivers from the first two heats racing in an additional round if required. Jolyon will team up with 2015 DTM Champion Pascal Wehrlein for Team Young Stars, and the pair will take on either Team England 1 or Team Brazil, if they beat Grosjean and Hoy in the opening round. Jolyon will then face off against either two-time British Touring Car Champion Jason Plato or Felipe Massa, who narrowly missed out on the Formula One World Championship in 2008.

Sir Chris Hoy is one of Great Britain's most celebrated Olympians, and he will return to the stadium in which he carried the flag for Team GB at the Opening Ceremony of London 2012. The 39-year-old has now turned his hand to motorsport and, along with team-mate Charlie Robertson, claimed the 2015 European Le Mans Series LMP3 title this year.

Hoy said: "I'm really excited to get this late call-up. I don't expect to be as fast as the real professionals but I'll do my very best. Of course I'm sorry to hear about Jorge's injury too but this is a wonderful opportunity and I'm really looking forward to it. Now I'll try to put on a show for the fans in the stadium in London tomorrow."

Lorenzo's place in Saturday's individual Race of Champions competition will be taken by the winner of the ROC Factor, PalmerSport instructor Bradley Philpot. This competition had been run over social media, with fans asked to vote for their two favourite amateur drivers from a total of ten finalists, with Philpot and Irishman Des Foley eventually selected. Philpot then beat Foley in a head-to-head shoot-out at the Olympic Stadium on Thursday to secure his place in the Race of Champions.
