Solid progress thwarted in Barcelona

Jolyon Palmer carried out driving duties for the second successive day during F1 pre-season testing in Barcelona on Tuesday (23 February), with the 25-year-old improving on Monday's total number of laps as he continued to develop Renault Sport Formula One Team's 2016 challenger.

The French outfit's R.S.16 managed 37 laps on Monday as a frustrating software glitch curtailed the former GP2 champion's running.

Tuesday fared better from the outset with Jolyon unlocking some performance in the car as he edged towards an encouraging 1:25s lap time. The stop/start nature of Jolyon's testing duties continued, however, when a hydraulic leak was followed by a turbo-related problem, which forced the Southwater racer out of action for the remainder of the day.

Jolyon said: "The positives from today are immediately apparent. We were able to run a good programme in the morning, covering a lot of what we wanted to do. The car feels good and forgiving and provides a great baseline for us to work forwards. Unfortunately we did stop running early in the afternoon, but my overall analysis of today is most certainly positive."

Kevin Magnussen is scheduled to take over behind the wheel of the R.S.16 on Wednesday and Thursday with Jolyon likely to get his next opportunity during next week's test (1-4 March) at the same venue.
