Competitive showing for Jolyon Palmer at the Race of Champions

Lotus F1 Team Third and Reserve Driver Jolyon Palmer competed with the biggest names in world motorsport last weekend at the Race of Champions which was staged in London's former Olympic Stadium.

In an event which featured champions from the worlds of F1, touring cars, rallycross, IndyCar, and GT racing, Jolyon made it to the Quarter-Finals in Friday's Nations Cup team competition before suffering a narrow defeat in the opening round of Saturday's individual Champion of Champions event.

The Southwater driver was paired with current DTM Champion Pascal Wehrlein in the Nations Cup to represent Team Young Stars. In the opening round, the up and coming duo defeated the Team All Stars pairing of Olympic cycling legend-turned racing driver Sir Chris Hoy and Romain Grosjean, the man Jolyon will replace in the Lotus F1 Team's race driver line-up next season.

In the next round, they met three-time World Touring Car Champion Andy Priaulx, and British Touring Car Championship legend Jason Plato, who were representing Team England. Priaulx edged out Wehrlein in the opening heat of the encounter, but Jolyon pulled one back for the young chargers by defeating Plato in the second head in a Radical.

The two winning drivers were then pitted against each other in KTM X-Bow lightweight track cars and, despite a valiant effort from Jolyon to close down Priaulx's early advantage, her fell agonisingly short of progressing to the next round.

In Saturday's individual Champion of Champions competition, Jolyon was drawn against Blancpain GT Champion Alex Buncombe in the opening round. The British duo were evenly matched, and Jolyon was unfortunate to fall just three-tenths-of-a-second short of victory in both heats.

Jolyon missed out by just three-tenths-of-a-second in both heats of the encounter with his fellow Brit, both of which were contested in the lightweight KTM X-Bow track car on a bespoke track in London's former Olympic Stadium.

Jolyon said: "I am a bit disappointed not to have gone further. It was very close between me and Andy Priaulx in the Nations Cup. I had the beating of Jason in the first match of the Quarter Finals but Andy beat me and that's two Touring Car guys who are very experienced.

"It's been really good fun and I've enjoyed it here in my home city of London. It's been great and I think the atmosphere has been fantastic. Luckily we've had a lot of fans turn up, so that's made it really great for us - I think the stadium has been really good. It's a great event to be a part of and I hope to be back!"

Jolyon will return to action in Free Practice one for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix as takes part in his final weekend as Lotus F1 Team's Third and Reserve Driver, ahead of his promotion to a race seat for 2016.
