Jolyon Q and A: Answers

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your great questions so far, keep them coming in. Here are some of my answers to your questions:

Gabriella, Barcelona
Hello Jolyon, what three things would you want if you were stranded on a desert island?

A mate, a couple of jet skis and a lot of fuel!

Roberto, Florence
Jolyon, my son wants to race when he gets older and has recently started karting. Aside from talent what other qualities do you think it takes to become an F1 driver?

Hard work, dedication and intelligence.

Emma, Manchester
Hey Jolyon, if you could create a race with five other drivers all in equal cars who would it be and why?

Good question!

Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel because it would be awesome to go up against the best in equal equipment.

Felipe Nasr because that's what I did last year and I miss the competition

Finally my brother Will, purely for the fun and so I know I wouldn't come last!!

Steve, Chelmsford
What do you drive on the road and do you keep to the speed limits?

I have a Toyota GT86 and now a Lotus Exige as well. Both sporty and yes I struggle to keep to speed limits! But I manage... Sometimes!

Jake, Bolton
Who's your all-time racing hero?

I don't really have one hero; I admire loads of different drivers for different reasons. When I was growing up I always supported underdogs like Montoya and Alonso in their early years, they were entertaining to watch.

Stefanie Parnell
Who is, or was, your inspiration for becoming a racing driver?

Probably my dad, mainly because he was still involved with F1 when I was very young and I always loved watching it... From then on I didn't need another inspiration!

Oliver Cassidy
Are these Hybrid F1 cars actually hard to drive?

They are extremely complex now; there is a lot going on which the driver needs to keep on top of. It's not just about driving fast but also changing settings and tuning the car as you drive. In terms of pure driving there is a huge amount of power and torque which can be difficult to control, especially when there is low grip!

Helen Bragger
As Third Driver, what are your duties during a race weekend?

Firstly I do some FP1 sessions throughout the year; help setting up the car initially before letting the race drivers take the glory! Then during a race weekend I'm in all the briefings, working with the engineers, relating things back from the simulator. I have plenty of media duties and commitments as well... Finally I am chief coffee tester!

John, Crouch End
Hi Jolyon, what are the chances of seeing you in racing action sometime in 2015?

Sadly they are dependent on one of the race drivers getting ill, injured or banned!

John, Rye
You're obviously doing a good job at Lotus F1 Team, but how confident are you of a race seat next year, if not with Lotus then with another team?

My aim is to be racing with Lotus F1 Team. All I can do is my best in the car and show why I should be racing. So far it's gone well but there's a long way to go.

Dave, Northampton
Hi Jolyon! Do you think sponsorship money is more important in securing a race seat in Formula One than talent?

No I think talent is more important. Everyone racing in F1 is talented, without talent you would never get a chance in the first place. Sadly for a lot of teams sponsorship money is needed though and that can be more important than hiring someone who is very talented over someone fairly talented.
