Feature race winner Palmer ends Singapore weekend with 17th

Jolyon Palmer finished 17th in today's (Sunday) GP2 Sprint Race in Singapore after racing on the less favourable super soft tyres.

Starting from eighth on the grid after yesterday's excellent Feature Race win, he made a good start and was sixth at the end of the first lap after passing James Calado.

Running on the super soft tyres after double stinting on the preferable soft tyres yesterday, Jolyon's race was a compromise due to tyre degradation, but ran well early on.

He passed Tom Dillmann for fifth place on lap two, and then held his own on the super soft tyres, unlike other runners on the same tyre choice who were forced into early pit stops.

Jolyon held the position until the ninth lap when Jon Lancaster and Daniel Abt squeezed by, and the 22-year-old was asked to pit by his Carlin team for fresh rubber on lap 12.

Falling to 22nd, Jolyon showed his speed once more by setting the fastest lap of the race immediately after his stop, and climbed to 17th, right behind team mate Felipe Nasr at the end of the race.

Speaking after the race, Jolyon commented: "I got a good start and was running comfortably in 5th for the first third of the race. Unfortunately as I was on the super soft tyre I started losing the rears and lost a lot of time. In the end I had to pit and try and come through again. I set fastest lap but couldn't make up enough time. Overall I'm still very happy with the weekend."
