Singapore Pole Position Q&A

Following today's qualifying for the Singapore GP2 Feature Race, Jolyon took part in a Q&A with the official GP2 website:

GP2 Series: Jolyon, congratulations on your first GP2 pole position. How does it feel?

Jolyon Palmer: It feels amazing. It's been a long time coming. I came very close a couple of times before this year and after Monza, I just missed it. To grab it here is extra special and it's a perfect day: fastest in practice and in qualifying.

GP2 Series: How was your session?

Jolyon: The first half of the session was a bit of a nightmare really. I did a reasonable lap, but I lost quite a lot of time in there. There was a yellow flag, then a red flag and traffic…It was all going wrong. We pitted early and then we tried to get a clear run for the second set of tyres. I managed two clear laps and a tidy good lap and pole!

GP2 Series: Towards the end of the session, you also had pressure coming from Felipe and Fabio…

Jolyon: I was, yeah! Well after the first run, I knew we were quick, but you never know if you can get the lap, if there's going to be traffic. And then I did the time and I thought I could improve my own and I thought maybe other people could as well as the track was getting better. And then on the last lap I saw Fabio was on a good one. I was watching the big screen on my in-lap. But luckily he did not beat me.

GP2 Series: Fabio struggled in the traffic at least he seemed to struggle more than you. How did you manage to find that clear lap?

Jolyon: It's difficult because on a street circuit especially you can't really see too far ahead or too far behind so cars can sort of come from nowhere. But I just managed to find space in the second round and it was probably the most important thing.

GP2 Series: This track seems to agree with you. Why do you think that is?

Jolyon: I had a really good round here last year as well. I was really close to pole as well. I like street circuits in general and I just get on really well here. It will be one of the toughest races tomorrow. It's really long as well. Anything can happen.

GP2 Series: You will be starting from the front row next to your teammate…Is that an advantage?

Jolyon: (Laughs) We've had some close racing before but I think the main thing is the start and my main focus is getting to the first corner first and then really see how the strategy plays out and just push as fast as we can. I think we've got a really good pace. Hopefully, everything will go well.
