Jolyon Palmer signs with DAMS for 2014 GP2 title assault

British racer Jolyon Palmer has signed with DAMS for the 2014 GP2 Championship. The Sussex based 22 year-old, a three-time race winner, is targeting the drivers' title in his fourth season in the F1 feeder series. He will race alongside Stéphane Richelmi at the team next year.

SMALL_Jolyon Scored A Maiden Feature Race Win At Hungary In 2013Palmer enjoyed his strongest campaign yet in 2013, claiming two Feature Race victories in Hungary and Singapore and a second place at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. Despite a run of mid-season misfortune, without which a much higher championship standing would have been achievable, Palmer's natural racecraft and overtaking prowess earned him a strong 7th place in the standings. Only two drivers led more laps than Jolyon throughout the season.

Founded in 1988, DAMS have established themselves as one of the most potent organisations in global single seater racing, and have won two of the previous three GP2 driver's titles with Romain Grosjean and Davide Valsecchi. Both now enjoy roles with the Lotus Formula 1 team as race and reserve driver respectively. Elsewhere the Le Mans-based team has guided Kevin Magnussen to this year's Formula Renault 3.5 Championship, paving the way for him to join Jenson Button at McLaren for 2014, whilst also collecting the teams' title in the process.

Jolyon Palmer commented: "I only have one objective for next year, which is to win the GP2 title, and I believe joining DAMS will give me the best opportunity to achieve that. They have a great track record of leading drivers to F1 and I will be working extremely hard to follow Romain Grosjean and Davide Valsecchi and become DAMS' third GP2 champion in four years, and maximise my chances of securing an F1 drive for 2015."

Jean-Paul Driot, CEO of DAMS, added: "Our 2013 season was less fruitful than the two previous ones, but DAMS is still a top team and our hunger for victories and titles is greater than ever! With this in mind I'm delighted to welcome Jolyon with whom we've been in contact for a long time and who had a great second half in the 2013 season. I'm also very pleased to keep Stéphane with us, and I'm convinced that all the work we did with him this year will pay off in 2014. The experience and the evenly-matched capacities of these two drivers will enable us to fight at the front in the 2014 championship."
