Jolyon finishes 24th in difficult Nurburgring Feature Race

Jolyon Palmer finished 24th in this afternoon's (Saturday 6 July) truncated GP2 Feature Race at the Nurburgring.

Starting from eleventh on the grid Jolyon avoided the trouble in a chaotic start, which saw an accident involving Adrian Quaife-Hobbs and Kevin Ceccon, to lie tenth at the end of the opening lap. As a result of the carnage the Safety Car was deployed and the field were re-directed through the pits for several laps. This would also lead to the race being run to time limit rather than the pre-determined distance.

The race resumed on lap four and Jolyon came under an immediate attack from Jon Lancaster. Staunch defence allowed him to maintain his top-ten position as the pack came back up to speed however.

During the pit-stop phase of the race Jolyon continued to climb the order to as high as fourth place when the drivers on Super Soft tyres began to pit for fresh rubber.

Jolyon eventually pitted for a new set of tyres on lap ten from fourth place. He re-emerged from the pit-stop period of the race in 23rd position. Unfortunately a mix up lead to the wrong tyres being fitted to the car and that would force Jolyon to return for a second stop.

After leaving the pits again Jolyon set his fastest lap of the race on his first full flying lap, with a 1:43:361. He followed this up with a purple first sector to display pace not indicative of the final result. Ultimately the second stop prevented him from making the most of his speed.

Jolyon will now start tomorrow's (Sunday 7 July) Sprint Race from 24th, pending any post-race penalties to other drivers.

Speaking after the race Jolyon commented "I was 10th under the Safety Car and running well until a mix up in the pit-stops meant the team weren't ready for me when I came in and the fitted the wrong tyres. This basically ended my race as I needed a second stop as well."
