Palmer concludes strong first day of Jerez testing with fourth quickest

Jolyon Palmer completed a positive first day of GP2 pre-season testing in Jerez after topping the timesheets during the morning session before ending the day fourth quickest overall.

In his first outing with his new Carlin team, the 22-year-old Brit posted a best time of 1:25.330s during the colder morning stint to claim the top spot, edging out Dams driver Marcus Ericsson by 0.09s in the process. Jolyon then spent much of the afternoon session focusing on longer, simulation runs, posting a total of 23 laps.

Meanwhile, Hilmer Motorsport's Tom Dillmann ended the day on top ahead of Racing Engineering's Fabio Leimer with Jolyon's team-mate Felipe Nasr in third.

Speaking afterwards Jolyon said: "I'm really pleased with my first day today. We had a very good morning and this afternoon we did some high fuel runs and managed to try a few things and learnt a lot. We have some extra sets of new tyres for tomorrow now so I'm hoping we can further improve our qualifying car in the morning."

The second day of testing at the Spanish track gets underway tomorrow at 09:00 (local time) with full reports on Jolyon's official website.
