Excellent sixth for Jolyon Palmer in Monaco Feature Race

Jolyon Palmer secured an excellent sixth place during today's (Friday) GP2 Feature Race at the iconic Monaco street circuit, his best result of the season so far.

Starting from P6, the 21-year-old made a good start before coming under pressure from DAMS driver Davide Valsecchi into Turn 1. Jolyon drove brilliantly though into Saint Devote, going around the outside to maintain his position.

He then kept Luiz Razia's Arden car honest in the early phases of the race, and appeared to be much faster than the Brazilian, who in turn was closing in on Max Chilton ahead. On lap nine Jolyon closed right up on the two as they hit lapped traffic but due to the tight circuit he was unable to find a way through.

The Brit then made his single pit stop on lap 20, changing just the rear tyres, and resuming in ninth place after losing out to Esteban Gutierrez before immediately retaking him, as well as Razia when he took his stop.

After the pit stop shuffle, Jolyon was lying P7 and embroiled in a battle for fourth place, with a string of five cars from Valsecchi down to Gutierrez. Jolyon then moved up to sixth with five laps remaining when Stefano Coletti finally made his pit stop. He held onto his position until the chequered flag and in doing so will start from third place for tomorrow's Sprint Race.

Speaking afterwards Jolyon said: "I had a decent enough start to maintain position and was stuck behind Razia and Chilton in the opening laps. We pitted slightly earlier than the people around us and managed to jump Razia. Unfortunately Valsecchi put in some fast times in clear air and was able to come out ahead of us in the stops and afterwards I just couldn't pass Chilton or Coletti ahead of me so I finished P6. I'm very happy for the team as with Marcus finishing second we are finally getting the results we deserve. I now aim to win tomorrow's race from third on the grid."

Meanwhile, Johnny Cecotto Jnr secured his maiden GP2 win from pole, fending off Jolyon's iSport team-mate Marcus Ericsson with Giedo Van Der Garde claiming the final podium spot.

Jolyon returns to the track at 16:10 (local time) tomorrow for the Sprint Race with full coverage and live timing available on his official website.
