Palmer ends superb Silverstone weekend with P5 in Sprint Race

Jolyon Palmer added to his brilliant podium yesterday to complete a superb home GP2 weekend at Silverstone with P5 in today's (Sunday) Sprint Race - ending yet again as the top Brit.

After a weekend of wet racing, drivers were greeted with a damp but dry track for the first time with Jolyon unfortunately getting bogged down off the start line, dropping down to P17 and then running 13th on the opening lap. Undeterred, he quickly set about recovering and gained a place back the next lap followed by a further to sit just outside the top 10, chasing down Rio Haryanto ahead.

It wasn't long before he got past the Carlin driver with a great move around the outside of the chicane, before taking Fabrizio Crestani just after to gain a remarkable two places in two corners.

Showing superb pace, Jolyon then dispatched his fellow countryman Max Chilton to move up into eighth and a points finish as the skies above began to darken and the threat of rain loomed. His next target was Esteban Gutierrez and a four-car train for fifth with the Mexican defending very hard into Copse and almost pushing Jolyon into the wall.

With seven laps to go, Jolyon then got the run on Giedo van der Garde to move into P7 with iSport team-mate Marcus Ericcson behind him in eighth. The 21-year-old continued to push on sixth place Nigel Melker and was able to overtake the Ocean driver as spots of rain began to fall on the final lap.

In the closing stages Jolyon gained yet another position to finish fifth to complete a fantastic points haul for the Brit, which moves him up to 10th in the drivers' standings.

Speaking afterwards Jolyon said: "I had a very poor start and dropped back to P17 and then managed to make my way back through the field to finish fifth. It turned out to be a really enjoyable race, although I am sure with a better start we could have fought for the win as our pace was very good. Overall it's been a great weekend and thanks to the team and the British fans for their determined support despite the conditions. I hope to carry this momentum through to Germany and move up further in the championship."

Meanwhile Luiz Razia took the race win closely followed by Davide Valsecchi and DAMS team-mate Felipe Nasr.

Jolyon will now focus on the next GP2 rounds which take place in Hockenheim on 20-22 July. For more information visit his official website at www.jolyonpalmer.com
