Brilliant drive in wet secures Palmer home podium and top Brit at Silverstone

Jolyon Palmer secured a brilliant podium on home soil after showing superb car control in the wet during today's (Saturday) eventful GP2 Feature Race at Silverstone.

Adding to his sensational win at Monaco last month, the 21-year-old also finished as the top Brit in the 25-lap race, which saw two safety car periods and drivers battling extremely difficult conditions on top of poor visibility.

Starting behind the safety car, racing didn't get underway until seven laps in with Jolyon holding onto his P3 start well,  tiptoeing around the slippery circuit and doing brilliantly to hold his car after aquaplaning at Stowe on lap 10. He responded the following lap by going quickest overall and fighting his way through the spray as he chased down second place Johnny Cecotto.

At the halfway point, Jolyon was starting to come under pressure from fourth place Esteban Gutierrez before the Lotus driver made his compulsory pit stop. Jolyon then took his on lap 18, timing it beautifully to get out again before the safety car period to recover James Calado's stationary car.

Several drivers then also dived into the pits with a few, including Jolyon's team-mate Marcus Ericsson, opting for slicks as the racing line continued to dry. The safety car peeled in with nine minutes left on the clock with the race now running to time. Jolyon remained in P3 as race-leader Fabio Leimer pitted before a second safety car.

Just three minutes remained on the clock as the safety car pulled in for the final time with Jolyon now under pressure from fourth place Nigel Melker. He hung on brilliantly though to claim his second podium of the season and his first in a Feature Race.

Gutierrez went on to take the win with Cecotto in second ahead of tomorrow's 21-lap Sprint Race which takes place at 09:30 (local time).

A delighted Joylon said: "I was really quick early on in the wet but as it started drying I started losing some pace. I was running P3 at the pit stops but we stopped a few laps after Gutierrez and he managed to jump us.

"After the safety car at the end I was struggling for pace as the car was set up more for the wetter conditions, but managed to hold on for a podium as Leimer was caught out by the safety cars. It was a great feeling getting a podium for my home race and now I'm looking forward to starting from sixth tomorrow (Sunday)."
