Eventful opening practice at sodden Silverstone circuit

Today's (Friday) opening GP2 practice session at Silverstone ended in a washout as severe rain hampered running throughout the 30-minute stint.

A persistent, heavy downpour made conditions extremely difficult with Jolyon Palmer describing the visibility as, 'the worst he's ever experienced'.

The 21-year-old Brit chose not to go out straight away, instead watching a number of drivers struggle to stay on track before Ricardo Teixeira spun and stalled causing the first of what would be three red flags.

When he did venture out, Jolyon, racing on home soil this weekend, was able to put in just one competitive lap to end P15 but with conditions so bad, positions and times remained meaningless. For the record, Fabrizio Crestani led the way from Lotus GP driver Esteban Gutierrez who was an earlier spinner.

Speaking afterwards Jolyon said: "That was a very meaningless session. I got one flying lap in but even that was more a matter of staying on the track. On the straight there was a lot of aquaplaning and visibility was the worst I've ever experienced. Hopefully it will dry out for this afternoon or qualifying will be a washout as well."

Jolyon is next on track at 16:00 (local time) for today's qualifying session with full coverage and live timing available on his official website.
