Brilliant drive by Palmer nets points finish from back of grid

Jolyon Palmer produced a brilliant drive during today's (Sunday) GP2 Sprint Race at Hockenheim, making up an outstanding 11 places from the rear of the grid to finish in the points.

Following a frustrating Feature Race yesterday, the 21-year-old Brit started 18th on the grid but showed superb pace and overtaking prowess to finish seventh. As the lights went out, Jolyon got away well off the line and managed to stay clear of incidents during an eventful first lap to move up five places into P13.

After a brief safety car period, he continued to push and soon gained a further two places, including a great move up the inside of Nathanael Berthon at the hairpin to go P11 and hot on the heels of Davide Valsecchi ahead.

As the race progressed, Jolyon was now involved in a five car battle for seventh and managed to move into the top 10 after Valsecchi spun at the hairpin. He continued to fight to move into eighth before taking a remarkable two places in two corners after first dispatching Stefano Coletti at the hairpin and then Nigel Melker just after to take seventh position.

In the final few laps he tried to close in on sixth place Johnny Cecotto, shaving several seconds off the gap but was unable to take the position before the chequered flag came out.

Speaking afterwards Jolyon said: "I had a great race, coming from 18th on the grid I managed to maintain a good pace whilst saving my tyres and then at the end of the race I passed a lot of cars and was very close to being P6 at the end. I'm happy with P7 though and it's great to finally get something out of this weekend. Now we can look forward to Hungary next weekend."

At the front, James Calado secured the win after starting from the reverse pole with Giedo Van Der Garde in second and Felipe Nasr picking up the final podium spot.

Jolyon is next in action this coming weekend at the Hungaroring in Budapest. For more information visit his official website www.jolyonpalmer.com
