Imola to replace Bahrain for GP2 Asia

GP2 series organiser Bruno Michel has confirmed today that Imola will run a standalone event in March to replace the two cancelled GP2 Asia rounds in Bahrain.

The 2011 Asia Series has been severely disrupted by the political upheaval in the Gulf, which led to one standalone event at Bahrain and one support slot for the Formula One Grand Prix being cancelled.

With cars and equipment also stranded in Bahrain, organisers faced a challenge to co-ordinate a replacement event and avoid confining the series to last month's Abu Dhabi weekend.

Michel told Autosport that all problems had finally been sorted, saying: "We have solved all of the issues," he said. "First of all we got the cars and the freight back from Bahrain, which was the most important thing that we had to make happen. Now everything is in Europe.

"We needed a week to find a place, make sure that it was properly organised and that we could do something good. So we finally chose Imola, and will go and race there for one event, which will be the last event for GP2 Asia and will replace the two events that were cancelled in Bahrain."

The Imola weekend will be held on 18-20 March, and will follow a standard weekend format - although one extra practice session will be added.

Jolyon has a proud history at Imola, having collected his maiden points in Formula Two when the championship visited the San Marino circuit in 2009.
