Stoneman seals title; Palmer secures second

Dean Stoneman has been crowned the 2010 FIA Formula Two Champion after assembling an unassailable points lead over title rival Jolyon Palmer.

The pair were separated by just 31 points heading into the final round at Valencia, with Stoneman holding the advantage following a double win in the previous round at Oschersleben.

Palmer retaliated in Valencia however, qualifying seventh as Stoneman was caught out slightly by adverse weather conditions and could only manage 11th on the grid.

Jolyon held position during the race despite heavy pressure from Benjamin Bailly behind, but ultimately lost the title as Stoneman came through the field to finish ninth at the chequered flag, giving him an unssailable points lead with just one race remaining.

"It's fantastic to be sitting in this position," said Stoneman. "Hopefully now with the Formula 1 test I can prove myself and go further on in motorsport."

The race was won by Italy's Nicola De Marco, who had qualified on pole position for the first time in 2010 and looked comfortable throughout the race. Britain's Will Bratt finished little more than a second behind De Marco, while India's Armaan Ebrahim scored his best result of the year as he came home third - his maiden F2 podium.

Philipp Eng and Sergey Afanasiev ensured a five-way fight for third place by finishing fourth and fifth respectively, with Benjamin Lariche finishing close behind in sixth.

The race was also notable for an opening lap incident in which Kazim Vasiliauskas' car was pitched into a dramatic opening lap roll through the gravel at turn one - Kelvin Snoeks making contact with the Lithuanian, who was thankfully unhurt.
